Good News For Many Wisconsin Dairy Farms!

چکیده
In contrast to large, modern confinement dairy systems, management intensive rotational grazing (MIRG) systems can provide a satisfactory income level on a farm that one family can operate with their own labor and management. This is good news for many farm families. What makes the news even better still for these families is that a traditional, Wisconsin dairy farm with average or better management has a good chance of improving its financial performance by judicious adoption of MIRG, especially if they are facing some important investment decisions.

To Achieve Milking Excellence
1. SMART FARMS SET PERFORMANCE GOALS There is an old saying that you can’t get to your destination unless you know where you are going. Many farms that start on the path to milking excellence don’t make it because they don’t have clear quality goals for their farms. Many dairy farms consistently produce high quality milk. In 1998, over 1,800 Wisconsin dairy farms had average bulk tank somatic c...

Most dairy farms in Wisconsin continue to produce most of their feed and have sufficient land for recycling manure nutrients through crops. However, to remain economically viable, many dairy farms are increasing herd size and importing more feed. The increased importation of nutrients in the form of feed and fertilizer has resulted in excessive soil nutrient accumulation (Bundy, 1998; Proost, 1...
متن کاملWhole-farm Phosphorus Management on Dairy Farms
Most dairy farms in Wisconsin continue to follow a fairly generalized formula of how to produce milk. Cows and replacement heifers are fed primarily homegrown feed from crop rotations comprising alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena spp.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.). Protein and mineral supplements are purchased to compliment dairy diets. However, the dairy indust...
متن کاملManaging for Milk Quality
Introduction Throughout the world, the business of dairy farming is rapidly evolving. Consumption of dairy products remains strong but fewer farms are producing more milk using less labor and more purchased services. In the United States, the number of dairy farms dropped from 192,700 in 1990 to 92,000 in 2002 (Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics, 2003). The productivity of these larger farms has...
متن کاملValidation of feed and manure data collected on Wisconsin dairy farms.
An on-farm study of 54 representative Wisconsin dairy farms was conducted to evaluate the influence of biophysical and socioeconomic factors on overall feed, fertilizer, and manure nutrient use. This report validates 1) how well data on cow diets, feed analyses, and milk production reflected established feed-milk-manure relationships; and 2) how well farmer-recorded data on manure land applicat...
